We wondered if anyone would be able to help us: the Elwes family of Norfolk are looking for the grave of Dick Elwes, proprietor of the Ketuldynia Estate, who died in a nursing home in Colombo on 14th December 1940 aged 74. In his Will he expressed a wish to be buried in the cemetery at Gampola. Results in our searches so far have drawn blanks. Dick (Richard) Elwes’ Executors were Oscar Percy Mount and Geoffrey Thomas Hale of Julius and Creasy, in Colombo. They appointed a European superintendant Mr. Gault to reside at Kituldenyia. Among other bequests, Dick left his servant Sinniah 2,000 rupees. To the Incorporated Trustees of the Church of England in Ceylon he left the sum of 2,000 rupees for the Clergy Endowment Fund upon Trust to pay the income therefrom to the Incumbent for the time being and from time to time of St. Paul’s church Kandy as an addition to his stipend.”
Is there anyone who could help us find where Dick Elwes is buried, please?
I am looking for my great uncle’s birth record.
His name could be Fitz George Simpson.
Date of birth: between 1865 and 1875
His brother, Albert Edward was born in 1873, Mannar, Sri Lanka.
Name of father: George Simpson
Name of mother: Jacohe or Patience Wilcomwright
I’m sorry I can’t help you Julie with any information about your Dick Ewes, but perhaps you can help me? This is the first time I’ve come across any mention of a superintendent Mr Gault. I believe he is my direct great grandfather, or his son. Do you know any more about Mr Gault, even the year he was appointed as superintendent? I have been looking for him for years without any success. Any help is appreciated.
The 1942 Ferguson Ceylon Directory records an A.B. Gault as the Resident Manager/Assistant Superintendent at the Paragons Estate, Kadugannawa. The Proprietor/Lessee is recorded as Miss Honor Elwes and the Agents/Correspondents as Julius & Creasy.
The same directory also has entries for A.B. Gault as the Superintendent at Kituldenlya Estate, Peradeniya and also the Peragolla Estate, Peradeniya. Whether these are the same person, or father and son, is not clear, although a Mrs. A.B. Gault is also recorded at Kituldenlya.
The 1937 Ferguson Directory has an A.B. Gault as Superintendent of the St. Martin’s Group at Rangala.
There are probably other entries too – http://www.historyofceylontea.com/ceylon-publications/fergusons-directory/
