Hi Marilyn. Not sure if this is the same person or not, but a Mr. J.M.B. Duncan died at the General Hospital in Colombo some time in mid (between the 12th and 16th) February 1910. The Ceylon Observer reports that he was a well known planter of the Doragalla Group at Pussellawa. Obituary states that he originally arrived in Ceylon circa 1884-85. He was buried at the Borella General Cemetery.
Hi Darren
Thank you so much, I shall look into this to see it it is him. So far this is looking good.
Marilyn
If you have anything else I will be very grateful.
Did some digging around and the previously mentioned J.M.B. Duncan was a James Marriot Pyper Duncan, who died at the General Hospital, Colombo, on 15th February 1910 aged 49.
Hi Darren
Could be him because some records just show him as James M Duncan. There was also another James Duncan, a tea planter, who was around at the same time. So where do I go from here? I think he was at Doragalla so maybe he is JMP Duncan and not JMB Duncan.
I have a picture of him in military uniform on a horse, perhaps Ceylon Mounted Rifles.
Marilyn
The Ferguson directories refer to the Doragalla planter as J.M.B. Duncan, so the “Pyper” reference that I have may be wrong. There was a James Mariott Byford Duncan born in 1860 (Reigate registration district) which may be the same person? There was also another James Duncan in Ceylon at the same time who was also a planter.
A J.M. Duncan is listed with the Ceylon Mounted Infantry (Ferguson: 1904, 1905/06 & 1910)?
Have a look at the History of Ceylon Tea website as they have various publicatons, including those of the Planter’s Association, which may give more details on James.
can you found any information about

hi, wow, i have for so long tried to find any information on my ´lost´relatives. Frederick and Rajapaksa were my grandparents. Their son (deceased), Edmund Alfred Price was my father.
My father had three children, Daniel (eldest) and myself (both born in Portugal) and Christianne born in the UK.
I would love, love to hear more information as growing up i had very little contact with my father´s side of the family.
Hi Gabriella,
Interesting!
Have you seen Joselyne’s post?
I am confused because I have a David Edmund but not an Edmund Alfred although Alfred is fairly common through my family tree.
Do you have a family tree that you could send me or any more info?
I am actually going to Sri Lanka tomorrow so I may be able to find out more.
Thanks
Nigel Price
All a bit confusing but have you seen message from Gabriella?
Frederick was my great uncle but I can’t seem to reconcile all his children.
Married 2 or 3 times to Gladys Dearman, Jerinimo Wynn and presumably Rajapaksa.
But I have children as Margaret and David which may be wrong.
Are you able to send me your family tree as you see it?
Thanks
Nigel Price
I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Augustine Parker McShane. He was married to Mary Nona Fernandez. They had two children that I know of, Mark Perivale ( my grandad ) and John Beaumont McShane.
I would like to know where any of them are buried.
Augustine Parker was a tea planter from 1885-1917. He worked on five different plantations; Hythe, Kalugama,Ensalwella,Clyde, and Fullerton. I believe they were all near Kandy area.
If anyone is also looking for Ancestory information on Augustine Parker, I have a lot of information regarding the origin of the McShane family. Thank you in anticipation
The Ceylon Observer reports the death of A.P. McShane occurring on Saturday April 19th 1919 at Kandy. He was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Mahaiyawa Cemetery.

Hi Mary,
I have a friend of mine in Kandy, Sri Lanka who’s surname is Mcshane and I was fascinated to know that he had Scottish ancestry, His great great grand father’s name happened to be same as your great grandfather (Augustine Parker McShane), He asked me to find out about his Great Great Grand Father as I was based in The UK and fortunately I stumbled upon your post and I think we are talking about the same person. please contact me (shakaf@gmail.com) and I can put you through to them.
Hi Mary
I’m also interested in the Mcshane origin in Kandy Ceylon. My father’s ( now 77) grandmother was Angus Mcshane married to Francis D’Silva ( De Silva). My father’s DNA ethnicity indicates ancestry from Mainly SriLanka ( subcontinent) but also some other regions including Ireland/ Scotland , Northern Europe , Spain but also traces of south east Asia -Malaysia? . Therefore, the connection of a Mark Mcshane mentioned to have a Malaysian born wife is also interesting to me.
Thanks

It seems F A E Price arrived in Ceylon in 1911 and lived there most of his life. He took citizenship of independent Ceylon in 1951. His first marriage is documented in the local papers. There is also a photo of him in another paper. I have attached below a link to Ceylon papers (with F A E Price as the keywords) that you can go through, Not all papers / years have been scanned, so there are gaps.
