Who was Marasema Gedre Uku or Marasena Jedre Uku ? I understood that it was a pseudonym to cover up illegitimacy, George William needed his mother’s name for entry into St John’s College Cambridge 1886 & entry to chambers(law) 1909 Middle Temple .His father ,Edmund, a planter ,traveller & journalist was still alive then but died before 1916. Is there actual proof of a marriage between Marasema & Edmund?

Edmund Woodhouse was born in 1841 in Finningley, Nottingham,England. He was the son of Rev Gervas Harvey Woodhouse and Miriam Pigott.
Edmund’s son George William Woodhouse was married to Eugenie Amelia Dias Bandaranayaka in (Ceylon) Sri Lanka. She died shortly after her first baby who was my grand mother Eugenie Amelia Woodhouse.
Eugenie Amelia Dias Bandaranayaka (my great grand mother) was the daughter of Dr Abraham William Dias Bandaranayaka and Eugene Elizabeth Jayatilleke.
My grand mother Eugenie Amelia Woodhouse married Benjamin John Virco Trench Peter Thiedeman in Ceylon and my mother’s name is Princesse Eugene Thiedeman (she married Anthony Vernon Arnolda in 1943). My mother is now 91 years old and seated by my side as I write this.
Jeanne Gomes, I am the great-granddaughter of George William Woodhouse (I am the person referenced in Muriel Andre’s post, and the granddaugher of GW’s son, G Harvey Woodhouse) I can supply you with a digital photograph of George William. Do you have photos (files) you can send to us of your great grandmother and grandmother? I am uncertain as to how to contact you/send you the photo other than the post here. Our branch of the family has been researching the Woodhouse history for some time now, but we have very few photos of GW or my great-grandmother. We hadn’t heard much information about GW’s first wife (how did he meet her?), so are now learning from you. We are blessed that we are in an era where information can be searched online.

hallo, I have photos of George William Woodhouse & his wife AliceJoslyn Woodhouse, formerly Mrs Andre( birth name Bennett) G.W was firstly married to Emily Bandaranaika (so I believe) one daughter Emily who married into a Dutch Burgher family. Kyle Justin Joustra has the details on all of that side. Renee Beatrice Woodhouse was my mother in law.

I have quite a lot of assorted bits & pieces re the Woodhouse history & some of the Ceylon stuff as well. The Woodhouse family resided at the vicarage Finningley Nottinghamshire where Gervas Harvey Woodhouse was vicar (the Harvey & Woodhouse families had been united by marriage) Alice Joslyn & George William are in the same grave in Jersey, I have the last will & testament of Alice. Did you know that George William was in Jersey during the German Occupation? The identification documents are in the Jersey archives, I have seen them & have a copy. Yes I have a few photos & a modern one of the estate in Sri Lanka(sent me by the man who now owns it) Which Andre are you connected to? There were three of them. I seek information on Edmund, when did he die & where etc

I am trying to trace both my grand parents and great grandparents.
Father was born in Sri Lanka 24/1/1908 and Mother was born 19/9/1910. Their names were Andrew William McLeod and Mona Trixie Collum. Grandfather was Alexander Mcleod, Grand mother’s surname was Ivy Florence David? If anybody can help with any information it would be appreciated.

I am looking for the birth of Frances Harriet Ford who was born about 1853. On the English census of 1881 it says she was born in Ceylon. I know her father was called Thomas ( Tom ) but I don’t know anymore. I don’t know her mother’s name or if her parents were married in Ceylon. I haven’t had any luck yet on the various web sites.

I have been researching a Lewis HAMPTON family. John, born 1827 India, married Josephine PIACHAUD 1854, Holy Trinity Colombo, buried 1893 St John’s Lindula. They had children but I only know of four, only two with any accuracy. How might I research this?
JOSEPH Lewis Hampton we know from other sources was born 7 May 1855 and I feel certain that he married first sometime before 1879 because there are twin daughters reportedly born Ceylon in that year, Daisy Gwendoline and Dora Geraldine Hampton. Joseph became a government surveyor, married Emily Gardiner 1900 at Christ Church Colombo.
Of Joseph’s two known sisters, Laura married a CANTLAY and Ellen Fanny married a RUDD, more details known.
There is one unsourced and undated reference to a brother Norcott Thomas Hampton but I can only find a brother Norman A Hampton. Is he the same, and more knowledge needed?

Hi Vinoma,Just seen this post,your James Crowford Collom is in fact James Crawford Collum,whos father was Dr Robert Collum a famous surgeon in the East India Company and was good friends and travelled with Sir Charles Napier at the battle of Scinde,as well as being the assay master to the Bombay mint and also responsible for the Ex ameers,They also owned some tea plantations in Sri Lanka,his Mother was from the Sandeman family,James was born in India but spent a lot of his early life in England,his fathers family were the largest land owners in Ireland and were very important,James was my partners Great uncle,i have a lot of very detailed infomation that i think you would like,i hope you see this and reply,

Googled ‘G.W. Woodhouse Ceylon’ after finding this name as a ‘sponsor’ in my father’s 1903 Baptismal certificate. Baptism at All Saints’ Church, Fort Galle. Has to have been a close friend of my grandparents… the other two sponsors being my grandmom’s uncle and aunt. My grandparents home was Closenberg Galle. Now run as a hotel by my cousin Kumar… the current owner.
