Good afternoon,
I’m looking for more information on my family and I have just come across your website, what I’m after is who the parents are of William Johnston Hay and Mary Powell. I have William Johnston Hay marrying Mary Powell at Holy Trinity Church,Nuwara Eliya 1/1/1865, they were quite busy with children, William Alexander Hay who ended up in Kuala Lumpur, Robert Edwin Hay b1866 in Sydney, Australia, Nora Etheline Hay b.1871 married Dr Edwin Nelson, Nellie Constance Hay b.1875, and the most famous of them all Dr George Powell Hay b.1874?? Turns out born in Australia,Dr G P Hay, served in the Ceylon rifles, he also owned Kandy Imperial Motor Works, was the Mayor of Kandy for a while, studied both abroad and at St Thomas college, both him and his brother William Alexander Hay were known as Burghers, which must be on the Hay side, as in the Ceylon hand book and directory it has his mother Mrs Hay as an ‘Englishwoman’, the Hay boys also boarded with a Mrs Speldwinde, the mother grew crops which helped support the family, the farm was in Nuwara Eliya, also Dr G P Hay spent time as a medical officer on the German expedition ship ss valdivia. There is not much more besides he married the daughter of Dias, proctor of the court. Mary Powell maybe the daughter of Dr George William Powell who was stationed in Ceylon and was also in the Ceylon rifles. All this information is from all of you, Kind regards,
Lucas

Just came across your post by accident, while searching for information about my maternal great-grandfather’s sister. His name was John William Samuel Phillips (b. 1846; d. 1920). He had been a pioneer tea planter mostly upcountry around Kandy and Nuwera Eliya. After the death of his wife and in retirement he lived with his sister at Hapuroda (aka Hapoorodda), Badulla, whom we only know as Mrs Crofton.
I had always assumed that the sister was Alice Jane, wife of Percy Walter Leonard Crofton, son of Walter Edward Crofton and his wife, Mary Amelia Christiana (or Christina). However, on reading your post, I noticed that you give Mary Amelia Christiana the surname of “Phillip”. So am beginning to wonder if I have got my generations mixed up. Consequently, would be very grateful to know where you found the surname of “Phillip” and if there is any possibility that it could be a misreading for “Phillips”.
According to my research so far, Alice Jane and Percy Walter Leonard Crofton had no children.
Cheers,
CB
